Elrond stood next to his twin. It was time they made their choice, whether they'd belong to the Firstborn or to the race of Man. In his heart he wanted to belong to the Firstborn but he'd decide whatever his brother would decide. He has already lost his parents; he didn't want to lose his brother as well.
"And, Little Brother, have you made your choice?" Elros asked his brother. He knew his twin would choose the same as he and there for wanted him to make the first choice.
Elrond nodded, but didn't say anything.
"I believe you have to see the words aloud, little one," Elros smiled at his twin, he was being his stubborn self again.
"You first," Elrond responded.
"Elrond, this is no time for being stubborn, just make your choice," Elros demanded, making his brother jump.
Elrond didn't know what to do. He wanted to make the same choice as his brother's but if he'd be the first to choose then he couldn't pick the same. He looked at his brother's encouraging smile. Maybe he'll choose the same as me? He thought.
He took a deep breath and made his choice. "I'd wish to belong to the Firstborn."
Elros nodded. "I choose the Gift of Men," he stated firmly.
Elrond's shocked expression didn't go unnoticed by Elros. "I am sorry brother, but this is my destiny," he told his brother.
"What do you mean ‘your destiny'? What about ‘our destiny'?" he asked.
"We still have a few years, brother, and we both know that you belong to the Firstborn as I do to the Race of Men."
Elrond knew he spoke the truth, he had seen it with his gift of Foresight. He was to stand by Gil-Galad at the Alliance of Men and Elves, his brother would not be there.
"Rejoice that we still have a few years together, mourn me when I'm gone but don't let the grief consume you. Be strong and move on, I know you have it in you. You are very strong, stronger than me. But don't forget me," Elros made him promise.
"I could never forget you," Elrond promised. "I shall do as you wish, but I hate you for leaving me behind."
"I know brother, I know," Elros hugged his brother close.
Their choose had been made. Elros would lead the remnant of the Eden to Númenor and would be appointed first king of the Dúnedain. Elrond fought alongside with Gil-Galad at the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. When Eregion was overrun he fled with the remaining Noldor and founded Imladris, where he lived a long life until he departed from Middle-earth and sailed to Valínor.
